The UPI and Providers Steering Committee, led by the Nationwide Funds Company of India (NPCI), met on Wednesday to debate the timing of the proposed charge and different associated clarifications.

Retail merchants’ associations had deliberate a ‘No UPI Day’ on October 2 to protest towards the MDR however withdrew the decision after assembly Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman final month.

The committee is contemplating exempting companies with an annual turnover of as much as ₹40 lakh from the charge, increasing the exemption from the present framework the place companies with a month-to-month turnover of as much as ₹1 lakh have been spared, the report added.

MDR is a charge paid by retailers to the financial institution and fee firm processing a digital transaction. Shoppers won’t be charged the MDR. A 0.40% MDR would apply to service provider transactions above ₹2,000 or peer-to-merchant transactions, topic to a cap of ₹300. Sure classes, together with invoice funds, utilities, schooling, and gas, would appeal to a flat ₹5 charge per transaction above ₹2,000.

Individually, authorities are contemplating elevating the every day UPI transaction restrict for sure classes to ₹2 lakh from ₹1 lakh.

UPI recorded a median of 802 million transactions per day in September. Transaction quantity rose 22.6% year-on-year to 24.07 billion, whereas transaction worth elevated 18% to ₹29.37 lakh crore.
